How does Himalaya ensure efficacy of its products?

Himalaya follows the principles of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) at our world-class manufacturing facility. This enables us to produce herbal products with uniform levels of batch-to-batch consistency and ensures that the customer receives the same high quality product regardless of where it is purchased. We strive to meet customer health needs through well-researched, effective and safe remedies.

Himalaya follows WHO (World Health Organization) protocols for all herbal formulations, and conducts tests on pharmacognosy which is the identification of the botanical origin and purity of the herbs used in our products. We also perform tests using analytical chemistry to ensure the purity of the herbs we use in our products; we look at the viscosity and pH balance of herbs including the identification of active constituents and microbial content, in addition to the total viable count, and the presence of fungus, yeast and mold.

Scientific testing has been a hallmark at Himalaya since 1930 when we embarked on our journey to make quality herbal products. At Himalaya, we use modern science to rediscover and validate Ayurveda's secrets by employing cutting-edge research to create pharmaceutical-grade products.

What safety measures do you follow in product development?

All our products are clinically tested for safety and efficacy and are completely free from side-effects when used in the dosage according to the instructions on the product pack.

Do Himalaya products have side effects?

All our products are clinically tested for safety and efficacy and are completely free from side-effects when used in the dosage according to the instructions on the product pack.
The pharmaceutical range products are best taken in consultation with your family physician.

Does Himalaya use any animal products or by-products in their products?

Himalaya products are natural, safe and efficacious. Some of our products contain honey, bees wax, lanolin, milk and milk products that are of animal origin. But, these ingredients are obtained as by products without harming animals.

However, our capsule dosage form products that are sold in India and certain other countries are made from industry standard, pharmaceutical-grade hard gelatin of bovine origin which is free from BSE risk.

All other ingredients like proteins, glycerine and fatty alcohols used in our products are sourced from vegetables.

Do any Himalaya products contain alcohol?

PureHands Hand Sanitizer and Hairzone Solution are the only two Himalaya products that contain alcohol. These are external use products.

Pharmaceutical

What is the dosage for Pure Herbs and Himalaya Pharmaceutical products? Should the products be taken before or after meals, and what is the duration of therapy?

The dosage of the medicine depends on various factors such as age, the duration and nature of illness, and may vary from person to person.

The instruction to take certain medicines "before meals” and certain medicines "after meals", holds equal importance in all systems of medicine and is not restricted only to Ayurveda. This is based on the fact that in some cases, the food present in the stomach interferes in the absorption of the medicine. As a general rule, those medicines that may produce gastric irritation are to be taken after food and those which are muco-protective (stomach-friendly), are to be taken before food. However, it is best to consult a physician prior to taking any medication.

The usage of Ayurvedic products provides progressive but long-lasting results. Please allow several weeks for full benefits.

Are there any interactions when using Himalaya products with other medication?

Although we do not have evidence of any interaction, and our products are safe to use along with other medication, we advise you to consult your physician prior to using Himalaya products in conjunction with other medication.

Should a gap be observed between taking Himalaya products and other medication?

Although our products are safe to use simultaneously with other medication, as a precautionary measure, you may consider a gap of 90 minutes between taking our products and prescription drugs.

What is the specific time period to see product efficacy of any Himalaya product?

The results may vary from person to person depending on individual health conditions. Generally, Ayurvedic products provide progressive but long-lasting results. Please allow several weeks for full benefits in long term ailments.

Some of our products that address acidity, spasms, indigestion, cough, sore throat etc. work fast and provide rapid relief.

Does Himalaya use standardized extracts in products?

We use standardized dry extracts in our Pure Herbs at permissible limits.

Is it safe to use Himalaya products during pregnancy?

We do not recommend the use of our products during pregnancy, without medical supervision. We would like to clarify that clinical studies have not been conducted in pregnant women for the use of our products with the exception of Liv.52, Cystone and Pilex Ointment. Liv. 52, Cystone and Pilex Ointment have been subjected to clinical studies in pregnant women and are safe to use during pregnancy.

Is it safe to use Himalaya products for a long duration (six months/one year or more)?

It is absolutely safe to use Himalaya products for a long duration, until symptoms are completely relieved. The usage of Ayurvedic products provides progressive but long-lasting results.

Can Himalaya products be used while consuming alcohol?

Although our products are safe to use while consuming alcohol, they have not been tested in these conditions. Abstinence from alcohol is advised for general good health.

Personal Care

Can Himalaya products be used by both men and women?

All our Personal Care products may safely be used by both men and women.

Can common skin problems such as acne, pimples and blackheads improve with dietary restrictions?

A balanced diet rich in proteins, but restricted in sugar, soft drinks, chocolate and processed food is recommended. Eat plenty of leafy green vegetables and fresh fruits, and drink two to three liters of water a day to keep skin hydrated and flush out toxins.

Are Himalaya lotions and creams noncomedogenic?

Yes, Himalaya lotions and creams are noncomedogenic which means that they do not clog pores.

Can Himalaya products, especially Ayurslim, be used while consuming alcohol?

Although AyurSlim and all Himalaya products are safe to use while consuming alcohol, Himalaya products have not been tested in these conditions. Abstinence from alcohol is advised for general good health.

Why should face wash be used instead of soap for cleansing the face?

Face washes are typically soap-free formulations, which unlike soap, do not leave the skin feeling stretched or dry and are gentle on the skin.

When is the best time to apply body lotion?

Body lotions are best used after bathing, when your skin is most receptive to hydration.

What is SPF and how often should one apply sunscreen lotion?

SPF refers to Sun Protection Factor. Use a sunscreen with at least an SPF of 15. This offers adequate protection for everyday use. Sunscreen has to be applied half an hour prior to sun exposure and must be re-applied every two hours to get complete and maximum protection.

What is the difference between hair cream and hair oil?

In terms of texture, hair cream is thicker than hair oil. With respect to benefits, they both are excellent sources of conditioning and nourishment for the hair and scalp. Additionally, hair cream enriches hair with protein which encourages hair growth, while a hair oil massage provides relaxation and enhances blood circulation. For smooth and silky hair, it is advisable to apply lukewarm hair oil on your scalp and hair strands.

How often should I shampoo my hair?

The frequency of washing hair largely depends on the hair type and activity level. Shampooing three to four times a week is ideal, using a mild shampoo. Himalaya shampoos are specially formulated for frequent or daily use.

Is it essential to condition hair after shampooing?

The use of conditioners after shampooing adds shine and bounce to hair and leaves it tangle free. Conditioned hair looks thick and shiny. Conditioners also moisturize the dry, flaking scalp, and make hair easier to manage by reducing knots and tangles.

What is the difference between a foaming face wash and a gel-based face wash?

Both types of face washes are soap-free and differ only with respect to the delivery systems – foam-based versus gel-based.

What is the difference between lip balm and lip butter?

Lip balm and lip butter have similar benefits – they heal dry and chapped lips. The difference lies in the format. Depending on preference and usage, customers can choose either a tube, stick or a jar. Our regular Lip Balm is available in a tube, Natural Moisturizing Lip Butter is available in a jar, and Natural Intensive Lip Balm and Natural Sun Protection Lip Balm are available in a stick.

How often should I apply lip balm or lip butter?

Lip balm or lip butter may be applied evenly and liberally on your lips, as often as needed.

What is the difference between chemical and non-chemical bleach used in toothpastes?

A typical example of a chemical bleach is hydrogen peroxide which is very harsh on teeth and the mucosal layer. It also has associated side effects. Chemical bleach is not suitable for daily use. The non-chemical bleach stain removal systems include enzyme-based technology which acts only on the stain and is gentle on tooth enamel and gums. Non-chemical bleach is suitable for daily use.

Do Himalaya hair oils contain liquid paraffin or mineral oil?

Himalaya hair oils contain a blend of vegetable oil and mineral oil.

Are your Toothpastes fluoridated and what is the source of the fluoride?

Our Dental Cream and Complete Care toothpaste contains natural fluoride, sourced from minerals, as it renders therapeutic benefits.

Is the use of talc in Himalaya Baby Powder safe for babies?

Baby Powder has talc as its base ingredient. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has determined that talc is Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS).

Does Himalaya Baby Oil contain liquid paraffin or mineral oil?

Himalaya Baby Oil does not contain liquid paraffin or mineral oil; it is a blend of vegetable oils.

What is the best massage oil to use for babies?

Massaging is an extremely beneficial exercise, which relieves symptoms of colic, regulates your baby's digestive, respiratory and circulatory systems and helps them to relax. Massaging also helps you, as a parent, to become aware your baby's growth and development. However, it is essential to consult your doctor to learn about the correct massaging techniques. This is because your baby's body is extremely delicate and is prone to injury.

For babies, it is important to use a herbal baby oil that will soothe and nourish his skin.

We recommend: Himalaya's Nourishing Baby Oil is a light, non staining oil that can be used before bathing as massage oil or for moisturizing after bathing. How can I ensure that my baby is eating well?

Sometimes feeding your baby seems like a very tough task! The best way to ensure that he is eating well is to feed him when he is awake and happy! Keep a tab on his meal times and try to stick to the same routine each day. Also, refrain from feeding him too much food, too frequently.

Doctors recommend that you breastfeed your baby until the age of six months. Breast milk contains all the important nutrients for your baby's growth and development. Breastfeeding infants also have stronger immunity, which helps them fight infections.

After seeking your doctor's advice, you may start feeding semi-liquid rice cereals, barley or oatmeal between the ages of four to six months. At this point, a lot of mothers are advised to start supplementing the baby's diet with formula feeds. However, if your baby is losing weight, this is a cause for concern. In such cases, it is important to consult your pediatrician.

What is the best remedy for babies suffering from colic pains?

Colic pains are extremely common in babies. It usually manifests as an acute pain with intense stomach cramping. The pain, which is a result of too much gas accumulating in the stomach, usually subsides once the baby's digestive system strengthens. However, until then you need to ensure you feed and burp him regularly, help him dispel gas by laying him on your stomach and knees and help him remain calm.

What can I do to prepare for traveling/holidaying with a baby?

After the birth of your baby, it is very important to bond as a family. Holidaying as a family or paying an overnight visit to relatives or friends will help you do just that. However, traveling with a baby can seem like a daunting task at first! So, here are a few guidelines:

• Pack all your baby essentials like diapers, baby products and medicine

• Refrain from traveling by air in the first few months as it can be a very uncomfortable experience for your baby

• Only plan long vacations with you baby after he has completed six months. By this time, he would have had most of his vaccinations and will be better protected against infections

• Try and maintain your baby's daily feeding schedule so that he does not get hungry

• Pay a visit to your doctor and ask him to give you a go-ahead before you plan your first travel. Keep the doctor's number handy for a consultation if anything goes wrong

What do you recommend for eradicating heat rashes on baby's skin?

During summer months, it is extremely important to keep your baby cool. So, dress your baby in breathable layers to allow proper ventilation. As cotton clothes are sweat absorbent, it is preferable to dress him in these. If you must take your baby out in the sun, you should try to lessen sun exposure as much as possible. Contrary to what you may think, heat rashes also occur during winter months! Bundling up your baby too warmly can make him sweat and irritate the skin, which can result in a bout of heat rash. Make him wear cotton clothes first, followed by other 'warm' fabrics like wool.

What are some of the skill-building games and activities that I can play with my baby?

For skill-building at a later stage, you can introduce picture books and innovative toys. Wooden blocks, clays and sand have different texture, so you can slowly introduce them to these. However, you must monitor playtime at all times as foreign objects may become choking hazards.

How can I ensure that my baby sleeps through the night?

Rest and sleep is extremely important for baby's growth and development. It is also important for you, as a parent, to get a good night's sleep! Often, babies sleep through the day and keep the household awake all night. In such cases, you must change his sleep cycle and keep him awake during daytime.

Here are some things night-time routines that might help:

• Feed your baby one or two hours before bedtime

• Play with your baby and spend some time with him just before bedtime

• Play some music

• Sing a lullaby

• Give him a bath

How can I take care of my baby when he has got fever?

Taking care of a baby when he is unwell is very distressing for a parent! However, it is important to keep calm and assess the situation before doing something about it. If he has got the flu or diarrhea, ensure that he's able to breathe well, rehydrate him at regular intervals and keep him warm. Take his temperature and monitor his condition. Only administer the medication that has been prescribed by the doctor.

In some situations, however, it is important to call emergency services right way:

• If he has a very high temperature (more than 100.4 degree)

• If he has uncontrollable diarrhea

• If he refuses to eat anything

It's important to remember that babies will get ill from time to time, so you must speak to a doctor who can advise you on some medications that you should keep handy at all times.

What is the best bathing procedure for babies?

In warmer climates, it is important to bathe your baby or give him/her sponge baths on a regular basis. First and foremost, you need to keep everything you are likely to keep at hand as you cannot leave your baby alone during bath-time. Fill the baby bath basin with lukewarm water and help your baby to get in. Holding him firmly, apply herbal baby products that are mild and gentle. What is the remedy for diaper rash?

Diaper rash is a very common skin infection that causes baby's skin to become sore, tender and itchy. Moist, warm and enclosed environment of diapers are responsible for bacterial growth and rashes. Today, newer 'breathable' diapers have been designed for ensure a 'cotton-like' feel for babies.

The best treatment for diaper rash is to keep the baby's skin as clean as possible. Most diaper rashes last only a few days and can be treated at home. However, you should:

• Change diapers frequently. If diaper rash is found, diapers should be changed at least every 2 hours during the day and once at night.

• Clean the soiled area with warm, clean water and pat dry. Avoid wipes and soaps

• Use barrier creams over the area before placing another diaper. They protect the skin from coming into contact with urine or stool

• Use talcum powder to protect the skin against moisture

• Use a mild, diaper rash cream to treat the condition
